Create and enable a policy rule
Create a tenant policy rule in Policy Studio with the guided builder, preview its impact, then turn it on so it guards the actions you choose.
Purpose
Add a guardrail to your workspace by building a policy rule in Policy Studio, reviewing its plain-language impact, and turning it on so the actions you choose require approval or are held before they run.
Who this is for
Owners and admins setting workspace guardrails for assistant and publishing actions.
Prerequisites
- An owner or admin role on the workspace, so you can create and enable policy rules.
- A clear idea of what you want to guard, such as public posting, paid campaigns, translation, or data export.
- Agreement on who should approve the guarded action, so you can assign the right approvers.
Steps
- Open Policy Studio from the workspace navigation.
- Start from a template that fits your goal, or choose New rule to build one from scratch.
- Name the rule, describe what it does, and set what it applies to, its risk threshold, provider readiness, and schedule.
- Choose whether the rule requires approval or blocks the action, then select the approvers who sign off.
- Review the impact preview, then save the rule; it is created turned off so nothing changes yet.
- Run a check to confirm the outcome, then use Enable on the rule to turn it on.
Expected result
Your rule appears in the rule workspace marked Enabled, with its conditions, approvers, and schedule shown, and the actions it covers now follow the guardrail you set.
Verification
- The new rule appears in your rule list with an Enabled status after you turn it on.
- The impact preview and saved summary describe the rule in plain language that matches what you intended.
- A check of a matching scenario returns the outcome you expect, such as approval needed or blocked, with no action actually taken.
If something goes wrong
- The rule will not save
- Resolve the highlighted fields first; a rule needs a name, and if it requires approval it needs at least one approver.
- The rule saved but is not taking effect
- New rules are created turned off; open the rule and use Enable to turn it on.
- A check does not give the outcome you expected
- The check outcome is set by the rule's Require approval and Block provider action settings and whether the action touches a provider that still needs setup, not by its applies-to or risk threshold. Adjust the approval or block setting, save, and run the check again before enabling it.
Permissions
Creating, editing, and enabling policy rules needs an owner or admin role; other members can view how guardrails affect their work but cannot change the rules.
